Ways to Wear It: Leather Mini

Wednesday, 5 March 2014

A leather mini is one of those pieces that I permanently adore. It appeals to the rock chick side of me and also the classic side, as there are so many ways to style it up. I don't have a big chest without a lot of engineering help and/or chicken fillets, so I'm one of those girls whose drawn to a short hemline when I go out, and the rock and roll leather version is the perfect iteration- it's sharp, bold and can be styled a million ways.

These outfits show why its such a versatile item to have in your wardrobe.

This lady puts a total mod spin on the leather mini, teaming it with a crisp, buttoned-up white shirt layered under a soft black mohair knit. The flat biker boots keep it no-nonsense for day. I love her bleach blonde hair and red lippy as well. So chic!

This little beauty, found on scentofobsession.com, is a really cute and feminine way to style out a leather mini, this time a skater style. The logo jumper is super-cute and the raspberry coloured shoes add a brilliant unexpected twist. The jumble of cuffs and watches keeps on the right side of twee, and its toughened up further with the tough bag with gold detailing.

This look takes the leather skirt into uptown territory. When paired with a simple cream sweater and fabulous claret trench, it takes on a sleeker identity. Love the addition of the black felt fedora and the unexpected, photographers style bag.

This look is so Parisian, it hurts! The dark leather is balanced out nicely with a longline peach blazer and grandad collared cream silk shirt. The quirky teal strappy shoes give a bolder hint of colour and draw the eye downwards.

This outfit is total love for me! It's what I would look like in my dreams! The quilting on the skirt and the pencil shape are just gorgeous. The fit is balanced out with a baggy, oversize black sweater with bold logo, and the neat little perspex clutch and bunch of chunky rings is gorgeous.Plus, it even looks (whisper it...) comfortable!

This is from Wendy's LookBook. I'm obsessed with Wendy. She is perfection when it comes to style. And of course she knows what to do with a leather mini! Her pencil shape skirt had a cheeky mesh stripe which is amazing. She picks up on this stripe with a black and white stripy crop top, simple black pumps and bright red bag. The master!

And finally...AJ is really my ultimate style icon these days. She's morphed into a really elegant lady but she still nods to her rocker past and I just love the way she fuses to two styles into a modern, grown-up statement. Here, a leather pencil skirt looks ultimately classy paired with a white silky blouse, patent pumps and a turquoise pendant.

The key here seems to be to balance out the strength of a leather skirt with looser cuts on the top half, sorbet or bright shades to add a bit of colour, and a more demure top half. Lessons well learnt!
