When is a dress more than a dress?
I ask, because this polka-dot Zara number has been taking the world by storm. Not only is it plastered all over your Instafeed and every single style blog out there, now it even has a day in it's honour designed to empower women.
So what exactly is it about this piece that captures the collective imagination so well?
Modest to the point it could be accused of being sack-like, the dress is so popular that it even has a dedicated Instagram account. It has universal appeal because it suits so many occasions, from a summer barbecue to officewear, to a night out.
It's flattering on all kinds of figures, thanks to the drapey cut, high neckline and three quarter length sleeves.

'Ceres' cropped leather jacket | All Saints
'All Star' white leather trainers | Converse
Black cutwork basket bag | Primark
So many women of all shapes and sizes love this dress, because it's a catch-all.
Don't know whether to expect sunshine or storms with this weird, inconsistent British summer? This dress has you covered.
Not sure what to wear but want one piece you can chuck on and look chic? This dress is your gal.
It's no exaggeration to say it's swept the country and become an instant modern classic. It makes me feel a bit 'Little House On The Prairie' and a bit Stevie Nicks, and that combination turns out to be A Very Good Thing Indeed.
There is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to how you can style it, but I love offsetting it against simple white trainers.
The cropped jacket visually nips it in a little and gives a structure where it could sometimes be a little shapeless.
Then I'm absolutely loving my bargain basket bag that was part of my last Primark haul. I changed the strap for a black and white canvas one that is much sturdier than the one it originally came with, and adds a little something extra to the look.
I feel very effortless in his and also part of something bigger - and that is a very rare function of fashion.
This dress has opened my eyes and given me a new default uniform for transitional weather. Long live the Zara polka dot dress of dreams!
