When did the world get so dark?
With the headlines dominated with the relentless spread of Covid-19, and pretty much the entire world on lockdown, it does feel like we’re living in a film at the moment.
Most of us have had to get used to new, restrictive routines overnight. We no longer have the outlet of seeing friends, going to the gym or having a night out. Our days are topsy-turvy, and pyjamas have become acceptible day wear.
In these times, fashion might seem frivolous. But I firmly believe it can be an outlet - for creative expression and for boosting your confidence.
For me, I’ve been mostly spending the day in my gym clothes so I can get out for a run, but I know in the long term that doesn’t make me feel good. Getting dressed properly is a way to keep your mental health in check, even when you can’t leave the house.
These little rituals have their part to play in making us feel that it’s going to be alright.
We may not be able to show up, but we can still dress up.
For that reason, I’ve started the #ShutInStyle hashtag on Instagram as a way for us all to share our lockdown looks and feel good about ourselves. All are welcome, so please join in and show off your style even in troubled times.
Neon yellow jumper | Whistles
Navy pleated midi skirt | Jaegar
Nude leather ankle boots | Zara
Studded satchel bag | Monaveen London
White ceramic J12 watch | Chanel
A pop of neon yellow felt about right to reflect this sunny mood. I love this lightweight Whistles knit, that would also pair well with some tan trousers - you can’t look at something in this colour and not feel a little bit happy.
A navy midi skirt is a good contrast with the bright colour, and such a versatile piece to own - undeniably smart with a crisp white shirt for the office, and great with a cropped vest or a tee for the weekend.
I paired the two with some nude leather ankle boots - the shade makes them feel right for spring, but they keep your feet so much warmer while it's still a little chilly outside.
I paired it with another nude leather item - this stunning heavily studded little satchel bag that’s the perfect size for some essentials. Not that I will really need them seeing as we’re not leaving the house!
The final touch was a classic watch, my Chanel J12. This was an investment piece that has stood the test of time, as it's perfectly balanced between being sporty and smart. I love the contrast of the sleek white ceramic against dark shades.
So that’s my attempt at ‘Shut In Style’, and I’m going to keep going with these posts throughout the lockdown here in the UK.
Take care of each other, stay home, remember your compassion and keep safe.
