Kiehl’s is one of those skincare super-brands beloved by makeup; artists and celebrities, that you constantly hear great things about and yet...I've never tried a single one of their products.
I know, I know...bad beauty blogger, right? Somehow, I’ve just never worked my way around to it, despite my nearest city being blessed with a shiny Kiehl’s store. I didn’t really know much about the brand, but I had the perfect opportunity to find out when I got invited along to a blogger’s evening they’d kindly arranged.
We were welcomed along to an evening of discovering the brand, trying out the products, munching stone-baked pizza and trying a yoga and meditation session at the Ugly Bread Bakery.
Kiehl’s has a much longer heritage than I realised, being founded 160 years ago as a traditional apothecary in the Big Apple.
It started off mainly as effective, no-frills remedies for men, with a famous ‘blue astringent’ that got the brand noticed. Today, it’s a multinational business with a heart, still espousing worthy causes, high ethical standards and producing premium effective products - and that’s where my introduction to the brand begins.
I knew about its famous Midnight Recovery Concentrate and the Creme De Corps body lotion but that was about it. Kiehl’s doesn’t actually pay for any advertising - instead relying on the effectiveness of its products and the word of its fans- now that’s a strategy I really appreciate.
First off, we did a bit of skin analysis with testing strips to understand our skin type better. Mine’s always been normal/combination, but at the moment it's super dry - partly to do with the weather, and partl those crazy pregnancy hormones! I’ve even developed a dry, flaky patch on my cheek lately, so I was interested to find out what products could help.
First up, I tried the Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energising Radiance Masque. It’s an instant facial in a pot that brightens and revives tired, dull skin by evening the skin tone and gently exfoliating.
Kiehl’s have never used microbeads, which is brilliant news, and the seeds in this masque are less damaging to the skin. You apply a thin layer for 5-10 minutes and then wash off. Even just testing on the back of my hand made my skin look noticeably brighter, so I was impressed.
Next, I tried the Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate. This is one product I was really interested in as I am getting fine lines at the moment. The serum has 10.5% Vitamin C, which is one of the most powerful forms of line-reducing skincare available. The serum is proven to visibly reduce lines and wrinkles while improving the skin’s texture and radiance. It felt amazing and silky on application.
I followed it up with a dose of the famous Ultra Facial Cream, which contains super-moisturisng Squalene and Glycoproteins, which strengthen the skin’s natural defences. I loved this as it felt rich but also really light-weight, sinking in instantly and getting rid of my rough flaky patches - hurrah!
It’s the ideal cold-weather solution and it didn’t feel like it was too greasy and smothering like some creams.
Unfortunately I didn’t get to stay for the yoga and meditation session , as I wanted to get home to put Theo to bed myself, but I did have a lovely evening and I’ve definitely discovered a few products I really wanted to try.
We all went home with a lovely selection of Kiehl’s samples to try, so I’ll be putting those to the test and booking in for my personalised skincare consultation soon!
What are your favourite Kiehl’s products? Any I should add to my list?
